Abubakar Lawal's Solitary Goal Takes Wikki Tourists to NPFL Top Spot

Wikki Tourists continued their push for the 2015/16 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title with a 1-0 defeat of the visiting El-Kanemi Warriors to extend their winning streak. The solitary goal came off the boots of Abubakar Lawal and this ensured that the coach Abdul Maikaba side went two points clear of second placed Rangers International.

The host took control of the encounter right from the commencement of proceedings with Lawal Abubakar hitting his first shot on target after 15 minutes and forcing goalkeeper George Michael to a big save.

‎With the league's top scorer, Godwin Obaje leading the Wikki onslaught in the attack comprising the other lethal pair, Mubarak Umar and Hassan Hussein, El-Kanemi's backline had to be at their very best to truncate a number of raids on their post area. Indeed, the Maiduguri Warriors' defence line led by former Kano Pillars' Zango Umar defended well throughout the first 45 minutes to head to the locker room without conceding.

‎On resumption of the second half it was the away team that had two clear cut chances to open scoring with Ibrahim Mustapha and Uche Ohanachom involved on both occasions. They would rue those missed opportunities some minutes after, specifically on the 57th minute when Abubakar hit the net to send the stands in electrifying jubilation.

The rest of the half saw both sides in near even exchanges with El-Kanemi seeking to restore parity and avoid a second defeat of the season to their opponents who won the corresponding fixture 1-0 in Katsina. Wikki on their part were plotting to consolidate with a second goal while defending their lead.

Wikki stay top of the log on 37 points and on their heels are Rangers on 35 points while Rivers United with a game against Enyimba on Thursday are third with 34 points.
