American Consortium Takeover Swansea City in £100m Deal

Swansea City have announced that they are set to be taken over by an American consortium subject to Premier League ratification. The group, led by Jason Levien and Steven Kaplan, have agreed a deal worth around £100 million for 60% of the Welsh club.

Swansea City Supporters’ Trust, who own 21.1%, are unaffected by the takeover, but chairman Huw Jenkins and vice-chairman Leigh Dineen will see their holdings reduced from 13.2% and 5.3% respectively.

Businessmen Brian Katzen, Rob Davies, and John van Zweden are all expected to sell all or most of their shares. Meanwhile it is unclear how much current majority shareholders Martin Morgan and wife Louisa will sell of their 23.7% stake.

Levien is managing general partner of MLS side DC United, while Kaplan is vice-chairman of NBA franchise the Memphis Grizzlies.

They are thought to be keen to buy the Liberty Stadium, according to the BBC.

‘Both see the takeover of Swansea City as an exciting opportunity for long-term growth in the club in every area,’ according to the club statement.
