Considering the fact that Former Manchester United winger Ronaldo, a three-time Champions League and Ballon d’Or winner, is one of the most recognized figures in the tournament, Portugal coach has expressed his fear of imminent terrorist attack during Euro2016 which is due to commence on June 10.
The presence of Real Madrid star and Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo increases the risk of an Islamic State style terror attack at Euro 2016, claims national team boss Fernando Santos.
France are set to host the tournament this summer on high security alert, overshadowed by the ISIS terror attacks that shook Paris last November, leaving 130 people dead.
And ahead of the opening match on June 10, Portugal coach Santos has admitted that iconic talisman Ronaldo increases the safety risk for both his side and the tournament at large.
‘As everybody knows, Portugal is considered one of the high-risk teams due to the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo. But we are prepared for this,’ Santos told reporters at Wembley after his side’s 1-0 friendly loss to England on Thursday.
‘In reality, this will be the responsibility of the French security. Our fans will have to understand that at certain moments we won’t be able to release our players as we would like.’
Portugal will kick start their Euro2016 campaign when they face Iceland on Tuesday 14 June 2016.
